What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Transponder Codes

As its name suggests, transponders transmit an encoded signal that contains the four-digit code when it is questioned by air traffic control. This signal is known as an SQUAWK code and it is the basis for identifying aircraft on radar screens. It is also used to relay an exact message to the air traffic control system in a crisis or to inform controllers to changes in weather conditions. Squawk codes are commonly employed to communicate with ATC in situations where the pilot cannot communicate via radio. They are very important to ensure safe flying.

Every aircraft is equipped with a transponder that responds to radar probes by identifying a code. This enables ATC to locate an aircraft in a crowd of screens. Transponders can be set to respond in various ways when interrogated. Mode A only transmits the code, while mode C also provides altitude information. Mode S transponders give more detailed information like call signs and positions which are useful in crowded airspace.

A PIN code is a collection of numbers (usually four or six digits) that are used to access the device or system or service. For instance, a smart phone, for instance, has PIN numbers that users has to enter each time they use the device. PIN codes are used to protect ATM and transactions at POS[1], secure access control (doors computers, cars),[2] and internet transactions.

While a longer PIN number might appear to be more secure but there are ways to hack or guess a PIN code that is just four digits long. To ensure greater security, it is recommended that PINs are at least 6 digits in length, and include both letters and numbers. PIN codes are often required by some OEMs to allow key programmers who are aftermarket to prevent them from being used by people who are not authorized to harvest data from the modules.

VIN Numbers

VIN numbers can be used to identify cars and provide a wealth of information about them. VIN numbers are unique for each vehicle on earth and are not applicable to alien vehicles (or whatever). The 17 digits in a VIN code are made up of the combination of numbers and letters that can be decoded to reveal crucial information about your car or truck.

Modern cars are loaded with a vast amount of information about their history and specs and functions as mobile digital libraries. The key to accessing this information is the VIN number.
